For 2010, all Accents have a revised version of the 1.6-liter engine that's slightly more fuel efficient than it was previously. Additionally, the Accent gets a new trim level -- the Accent Blue. Thanks to revised gear ratios, the Blue is the most fuel-efficient Accent available; it's also the least expensive choice in the Accent's lineup.

Unfortunately, the Blue isn't available with antilock brakes (ABS); we tested an Accent GS last year that was missing this safety feature, and stopping distances were quite long. The Accent GS is now available with ABS. We'd recommend that buyers avoid the Blue and instead spend a little extra to get the GS with the ABS option.

Now more than ever, the economy-car segment is loaded with worthwhile choices, each with something unique to offer. If you're looking for entertaining driving dynamics, you'll want to check out the upcoming Ford Fiesta. The Honda Fit offers a more versatile interior and nimble handling, while the Nissan Versa offers a more refined and spacious cabin, and a bevy of high-tech amenities. Still, the 2010 Hyundai Accent deserves attention on the strength of its pleasant personality and low price.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2010 Hyundai Accent is sold as a two-door hatchback and a sedan. The hatchback comes in three trim levels: Blue, GS and SE. The sedan is sold as a GLS only.

The base Blue two-door hatchback makes do without a standard stereo, but it does feature 14-inch steel wheels, a six-way-adjustable driver seat with height adjustment, and a reclining 60/40-split rear seatback. The options list is pretty much limited to air-conditioning. The GS adds air-conditioning, body-colored outside mirrors and door handles, a rear wiper with washer, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and a remote hood release. Power accessories, keyless entry, an alarm and a six-speaker CD/MP3 audio system with satellite radio and auxiliary/USB audio jacks are optional.

The Accent SE two-door hatchback includes the GS's optional features as standard equipment and adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, a firmer suspension, foglamps and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Accent GLS sedan mostly shares its standard features and options with the GS. Optional Bluetooth connectivity is available across all trims.

Introduction

When the original 911 Turbo was introduced in the 1970s it was a terrifyingly fast and tricky car to drive. The current car couldn't be more different.

What are its rivals?

With a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds the Porsche 911 Turbo lines up alongside some of the world's most exotic and fastest cars. Ferraris, Aston Martins and Lamborghinis are all fair game for the 911 Turbo. The addition of a pair of variable-vane turbos (a first in a petrol car) allows the 911 Turbo to deliver a thumping 480bhp from its 3.6-litre flat-six engine.

At a few pounds under £100,000 the 911 Turbo is relatively cheap, undercutting the Ferrari F430 by nearly £30,000. Impressive, particularly as, if you happen to line up alongside the Italian at the traffic lights you'll get to 62mph 0.1 seconds quicker. Ferrari claims a higher top speed, but we reckon Porsche is being conservative with its quoted 193mph.

How does it drive?

Key to the appeal of the 911 Turbo is the ease of driving it. The Porsche proves that owning a supercar needn't necessarily be about high-rev antics, heavy clutches, tricky manual transmissions or hopeless paddle-shifters. The Turbo has all the day-to-day appeal of its less powerful, naturally aspirated relatives.

The cabin is surprisingly useful; those rear seats can be used for short trips, while folding them allows you to get larger loads than you'd consider in any of the 911 Turbo's rivals. If equipped with the Sport Chrono pack, pressing the Sport button gives access to overboost torque for the engine, increasing the output from an already high 457lb.ft to 501lb.ft between 2,100-4,000rpm. It also sharpens up the throttle response, making the Turbo even more sensitive to your right foot's input. Although the variable vane turbochargers give the 3.6-litre unit real tractability at low revs the Turbo is at its best above 3,000rpm, where it gathers pace with real ferocity.

You need to be quick with the gears to keep up; the shift, while initially reluctant when the gearbox oil is cool, eases up and moves with precision. It's a shame then that the clutch is so difficult to judge, its high bite and lack of feel sometimes resulting in sloppy shifts. The steering is sharp and quick, though the Turbo is keen to understeer unless provoked to do otherwise. The Turbo's four-wheel drive gives it remarkable traction, while the high grip levels make it about the most sensible, useable supercar you can buy.

What's impressive?

The huge performance is the most impressive thing about the 911 Turbo; that, and the ease with which its performance can be exploited. It's not intimidating, the surge of power when you push the pedal to the floor instead being hugely thrilling. However, don't get too carried away, as third gear will quickly see you break into three figures and it wouldn't take long to be testing Porsche's claims of its near 200mph top speed.

Hugely stable, the four-wheel drive system means the Turbo can put all its power down even when conditions are less than perfect; it'd leave a F430 Ferrari for dead on a wet country road. As ever the driving position is spot on and the relatively spacious interior and surprisingly deep front luggage compartment make it a rather sensible choice. Fuel consumption isn't too shocking either, the official combined cycle figure of 22.1mpg not that unrealistic.

Honda Design a Toy Racer

The Honda Racer is the joint brainchild of the Japanese firm and toy car maker Hot Wheels.

It's all part of Hot Wheels' 40th anniversary celebrations, which has seen a diamond-studded model and a unique Lotus toy also being created.

The 1/64th Honda Racer is finished in the same red and white colours as the Japanese company's1967 Formula One race car.

It also has an F1-style mid-mounted engine with its exhausts poking out from the top of the engine.

The engine is a scale model of a fantasy 2.0-litre V10 engine with Honda's VTEC variable valve timing.

At the front, the Honda Racer has an unusual split nose, with pods extending forwards to the insides of each front wheel.

Guillermo Gonzalez is senior designer at Honda's Research and Development Americas division, which came up with the Honda Racer, and he said: "This car combines Honda's racing heritage with Hot Wheels' reputation for performance and attitude."

A larger 1/5th scale version of the Honda Racer will be built for Hot Wheels' display at the Special Equipment Market Association show in October, which is a shop window for the world's tuning industry.

Lamborghini Gallardo Lp560

To outside observers, the whole process looks complicated and, well, a bit silly.

Clicking the right most e.gear button on the center console of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 engages Corsa mode. A push of a silver switch on the center stack disables the stability control and lights up two amber Gallardos on the instrument panel, the smaller of the two indicating that ESP is completely off. Left-footing the brake pedal and matting the throttle revs the LP560-4's engine to over 5000 rpm and creates a cacophony of popping and banging.

Releasing the brake pedal sends up a poof of smoke as the rear tires chirp and slip through not quite one full rotation. The car then bogs, as though hunkering down, before exploding forward a millisecond later.

"It always looks like a failed launch," shrugs photographer Vance. But to the nine satellites reading our position overhead, the Gallardo LP560-4's all-new Thrust mode is a raging success -- launching Lambo's latest supercar to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The quarter mile comes just a few beats later -- 11.4 seconds at 126.9 mph. Both numbers are pretty far off the pace of Lamborghini's estimates of 3.7 and 11.8 seconds. Who knew Italians could be so conservative?

Inside the low-roofed cabin, the LP560-4's attempt to violate Newton's second law is a comprehensive assault on the senses. Getting kicked in the ass a split second before being shot from a cannon is probably the closest approximation. The only thing missing is the taste of cordite upon the lips.

Thrust mode is impressive not just at mere sports car speeds; unlike the previous Gallardo launch control system that required manually shifting the gears, a Thrust-moded Gallardo LP560-4 will autorocket through all six gears on the way to a terminal velocity of 202 mph.

Just what you'd expect from a $201,000 supercar, right? Wait, there's more...

2008 Cadillac CTS

Like God and Congress, Car and Driver sometimes moves in mysterious ways. Which perhaps explains why the initial 2008 Cadillac CTS we tested was powered by the optional 304-hp direct-injection (DI) V-6, after which we moved to the monster 550-horse CTS-V. And now—ta-da!—we revert to the starter-kit CTS, powered by an alloy 263-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 with port fuel injection and variable valve timing. Should we have begun here?

Because this is a tale of two engines, let us turn straight to the numbers. Compared with the DI, the base V-6 propels the CTS to 30 mph in an identical 2.2 seconds. To 60 mph, it’s only 0.4 second behind, and through the quarter-mile it’s but 0.3 second and 3 mph in arrears. Driving the base and DI cars back-to-back, what you’ll notice is the more powerful engine’s half-second edge in 30-to-50-mph passing maneuvers. You’ll also occasionally summon a two-gear kickdown where the stronger engine begs for only one, and the DI’s tail is easier to rotate before the StabiliTrak intervenes.

The base V-6 emits a charming growl right to its 7000-rpm redline. At full whack, it is 2 dBA noisier than the DI. On the other hand, it’s quieter at idle and at a 70-mph cruise. Both engines offer smooth throttle tip-in and excellent idle quality.

Around town, the base V-6 earns a bonus 1 mpg but merely matches the DI’s highway economy. In our hands, a test car delivered an observed 23 mpg.

A “stripper” CTS with only the $1300 Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic, which includes a gloriously efficient manumatic, is $34,790. The DI costs an extra $1000. Because more power is always C/D’s mantra, we’d somehow locate the loot for the bonus 41 ponies. For 90 percent of daily driving, however, these two sedans behave like fraternal twins. GM could really simplify matters by making the DI standard. But the truth is, either of the V-6 CTSs—in terms of engineering, value, and dynamic charm—likely represent the finest effort in Cadillac’s 106-year history.

Audi has redesigned the TT for the 2008 model year. Audi's goal in the redesign was to make a bigger sports car with better handling characteristics. We think they succeeded. The new car is wider and longer than last year's model for more comfort yet it feels light and tossable.

The 2008 Audi TT will appeal to true sports car enthusiasts and weekend cruisers alike. Handling is crisp and steering is direct. With the standard 17-inch tires, the ride is quite compliant for a sports car, but it can be busy and bumpy with the available 18s and 19s. The interior is top-notch Audi. Tight panel gaps and soft-touch materials abound. The new, bigger TT is more accommodating to larger drivers than most of the other sports cars in this class. Both engine choices offer brisk performance, and the 2.0T is easy on gas.

The new Audi TT comes in a range of body styles, with engine and transmission options, and available all-wheel drive. The TT is once again offered as a two-seat roadster or 2+2 coupe. Each is available with front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive. Both body styles are 5.4 inches longer and 3.1 inches wider than the previous TT, which was last offered in 2006. The wheelbase has grown as well, up 1.8 inches to 97.2, but the weight is down more than 150 pounds, thanks to the extensive use of aluminum. V6 and turbocharged four-cylinder engines return, but the four-cylinder is a 2.0-liter instead of a 1.8.

Both the coupe and roadster are offered as front-wheel-drive 2.0T and all-wheel-drive 3.2 quattro models. The 2.0T models have a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower between 5100 and 6000 rpm and 207 pound-feet of torque from 1800 rpm to 5000 rpm. The 3.2 quattros use a 3.2-liter V6 that produces 250 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 236 pound-feet of torque from 2500 to 3000 rpm.

The 2.0T has EPA fuel economy ratings of 22 mpg city and 29 highway for the roadster and 23/31 for the coupe. EPA ratings for the 3.2 quattros are 17/24 for roadsters and 18/24 for coupes. Audi recommends premium fuel for both engines.

Fiat Stilo's Alfa 149

The next-generation Fiat Stilo's 'Compact' platform, has now been chosen for the new 2008-due Alfa 149, reports Automotive News Europe, who add that Fiat Auto CEO Sergio Marchionne is talking to other car manufacturers about sharing the platform's technology.

The highly versatile new 'Compact' architecture is an evolution of the existing Fiat Stilo model's C-frame platform and has been developed specifically for the Fiat's next C-segment car which will replace the current Stilo model range next year. Already confirmed to be used by the new Lancia Delta model (due in 2007) the 'Compact' platform has now reportedly been given the green light to form the basis of the vital new 'Premium C-segment' Alfa 149, which will succeed the Alfa 147 late next year.

Alfa Romeo had recently been considering two architecture options by either using the 'Compact' platform or building their next-generation C-segment model on a shortened version of their in-production 'Premium' platform. With the Alfa Romeo 159 sedan, 159 Sportwagon, Brera and Spider all being based on the 'Premium' floorpan obvious economies of scale and harmonisation opportunities presented themselves although the Premium architecture's biggest deficiencies, such as its inherent weight disadvantage, would have been difficult to overcome for a C-segment application.

New Honda Jazz 2008

When an Auto Express reader spotted this Honda in a motorway service station, it stood out because of its scrappy taped-up wheelarches.

On closer inspection, it was clear this was no ordinary Jazz, but a mule being used to test parts for the firm's next-generation supermini. After the success of the new UK designed and developed Civic, Honda's British arm is now playing a major role in the Jazz project. But the big news is that the car will be offered with a diesel engine for the first time.

This spyshot shows how the five-door will be bigger all-round than at present. Sources in Japan have revealed that the fresh model will use the same basic chassis as its predecessor, retaining the groundbreaking central fuel tank.

The current car's clever five-seat layout, which sees the folding rear bench hinge down into the floor, is already class-leading, and it's set to be carried over with only a few minor tweaks. Other upgrades will include a fresh dashboard design and better materials throughout. The existing model's 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines are likely to be retained, but these will be joined by an efficient small-capacity oil-burner.

The new Jazz is expected to make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, before going on sale in 2008.

2008 Ferrari F430

The days when Ferrari and Lamborghini were the sole, unquestionable, untouchable owners of the “supercar” moniker are gone. The Carrera GT’s clutch may have permanently besmirched Porsche’s “everyday supercar” rep, but the roadster's at least as dramatic as Maranello’s magic mounts. The SLR may be a dour machine driven by a brain-dead debutante, but the scissor-doored McMerc still has supercar written all over it. And those pesky Americans keep doing things to the Corvette that increase its credibility in the field of extreme machines. So is the “entry level” Ferrari F430 becoming a little, uh, pedestrian?

What are you nuts? One look at Ferrari F430 and it tattoos the word “supercar” on your retinas. While taller and hunkier than previous Dino-descended mid-engined mounts, the F430’s Pininfarina-penned lines possesses the kind of purity of line associated with High Renaissance art. Unlike its in-house stable mates and Bologna-born competition, the F430’s mid-engine proportions and curvilinear contours are quintessentially Italian, quintessentially super.

I didn’t need to tell you that. But the F430’s interior is something of a shock, a radical departure from Enzo’s philosophy of selling his customers an engine and throwing the car in for free. It's a sacred place, blessed with first-class materials arranged with minimalist purity. Credit is due to the optional “carbon fiber driving zone” and its F1-inspired tiller. Though silly at first, the little red hash at the twelve o’ clock position provides entirely useful Pavlovian conditioning (for a mere five grand).

Yes there are elegant details, but the stunning gauges are all, as befits a cockpit that places the pleasure of driving in the premier position. Taken as a whole, the F430’s sumptuous leather-wrapped interior feels like a stripped down racer. The engine-under-glass effect underlines the point. The branded induction system is the automotive equivalent of a brace of elephant guns gleaming in Hemingway’s weapons case: immaculately oiled, ready for action.

Firing-up the F430’s 4.3-liter V8 is like watching the opening scene of a James Bond movie: predictably ridiculous, yet giddy-making in its promise of extreme violence. Engage the F1-style gearbox and you’re away. A. Long. Way. Away. Calling the F430 fast is like calling Miss America determined. Zero to sixty is a sub-four second experience of mammoth, manic intensity; it’s like being shot of a cannon into a black hole. The dual-stage exhaust goes from a martini-soaked Frank Sinatra to a cocaine-crazed Richard Patrick in less time than it takes to crank a stereo knob.

The F360 Modena was a high-revving beast whose blood curdling howls were the mother of adrenal acceleration. The F430 is a different animal entirely, endowed with Corvette-worthy low-end grunt. Those eight little Italian cylinders stump-up 343 ft-lbs of truck-like torque, taking the sauce all the way to 483hp, at a [still] preposterous 8500 rpm. Trundle around town? Si, we do that too. Bend time? That too.

The Ferrari’s F1 transmission is proof that racing improves the breed. The original system was a herky jerky joke. By now, the paddle shift transmission is as good as if not better than VW’s DSG. The F430’s manumatic engages the clutch with balletic grace– or NHL savagery. The F430 gently whisked me from the daily grind and gawking SUV owners. If Jimi Hendrix was reincarnated as a gearbox, I’d be standing next to his Fire.

That’s because the F430 is a Little Wing on four massive 19” wheels. Thanks to an impeccably tuned suspension, meticulously selected ratios and Satan’s own powerband, the pace is fervid, the progress distraction-free. A little seat time quickly confirms Lamborghini’s German intervention was the wrong move. Without question.

The Italian F430 is opera to the Gallardo's heavy metal. The Gallardo is a weapon, but the F430 is the pinnacle of pistonhead performance pleasure. Even with rapid steering inputs, the G-forces build gently, effortlessly pushing you against its retro-Daytona seats. The steering feedback is so honest you’d think Simon Cowell is behind the headlights. This Detroit-fettled enthusiast will never forget that wonderful Saturday afternoon; the F430’s effortless rush makes exiting any bend a wake-up call for geographically biased automotive snobs.

Hell, even the Italian's electronic nannies have a unique, Ferrari themed persona. Never isolating and nebulous, the handling interferenza is as customer savvy as a concierge at the Waldorf-Astoria. That said, the F430's [optional] ceramic brakes' linear stopping and progressive punch leaves little need for computerized intervention.

I have never been so hardwired to a machine before; if Ferrari had an online dating service, Match.com would be screwed (so to speak). Yes, there are faster cars. Certainly, there are more luxurious cars. Reliable? Ha! But provided it’s not in the shop, the Ferrari F430 always delights, with its sublime handling, perfect mid-corner power and a roar that echoes in your mind for the rest of your years.
